MP780 has been used with IJT compatible inks for at least 2 years with no problems but suddenly freezes and displays 'wrong cartridge' blinking error. I removed and replaced printhead but then feed switch would not select rear 'auto sheet feeder' which machine says it needs to align printhead. When shut down and restarted machine has reverted to wrong cartridge message. Would like to use an open paper clip to poke a total RESET button but don't seem to be one any suggestions?

When the MP780 says "wrong cartridge" it is referring to the printhead, not any of the ink cartridges. It means your printhead has died and you need to replace it. If you want to continue to use your MP780 into the distant future, I would suggest that you purchase two new printheads because they may not be available forever or the price may go way up. If you go on ebay and find a printhead, you can see a listing of other printers that use the same printhead. Sometimes you can find one of these other printers for sale on craigslist at a cheap price. If you can see that the printer has no clogged nozzles, you can buy it just to get the printhead. But I would just buy new printheads.

Hi IM la Verne - Many thanks your trouble but what I'm surprised at is it's not had heavy use or been neglected or abused and I've not had any smudged or faint printing - absolutely no warning - do they really go so quick, so unexpectedly and so under used? By the way, in case its of interest I've discovered that the feed button will only work when the top is raised, and although the head error obviously stops printing it also stops the scanning function - hows that. Scrap it I suppose! Anyhow many thanks.

Yes, the printheads die for no apparent reason. I know of many cases where this has happened but usually they work for several years.
