Hi I'm new to this forum.. my name is Omar and I am experiencing a problem with my trusty PIXMA MP780 which has served me well for years. I had it connected to a USB print server and it worked beautifully till yesterday when it and the print server appear to have had a disagreement! Print server is dead and the USB port on the MP780 no longer seems to work.
Does anyone know if it can be replaced? and if so, how and where do I get the part?
Many thanks.. Omar

Did you test your USB port by plugging a different cable that is known to be good directly from your computer into your printer?

The USB port is a connector mounted directly on the motherboard of the printer and is probably not repairable. Most likely some itty bitty mysterious electronic circuit has blown. The Canon repair center in my area charges $250 for a replacement mothterboard.

My recommendation is to locate another very cheap used MP780 that has a defective print head or something else wrong with it that you can easily swap your good parts onto so that you can continue to have a working MP780.

In my opinion there is no other all-in-one as good as the MP780 series printers. In fact, while many people are getting rid of their perfectly good MP780's in favor of an all-in-one with built-in wireless (or some other lame excuse), now is the time for you to pick up a spare MP780 so the next time something goes wrong, you can continue printing with little interruption.

If you want to dismantle your MP780, here are instructions. These instructions do not explain how to remove the motherboard but after you look at the instructions, you may abandon the idea. You can gain access to the motherboard simply by removing the right side panel but I don't know if that would be enough for your electronics guy to do the work.
