Why do you need to do that? As far as I know green and red ink are sold at the same price of CMY inks. Unless you are having difficulty to buy them you will not gain any advantage to make your own red and green ink by mixing CMY inks. Besides, separate red and green inks are added to the ink system for increasing color gamut. If you produce red and green ink by mixing CMY inks the color gamut may not increase. You should be able to buy just red and green ink from Hobbicolors. They sell inks for pro9000. They should have red and green ink available for you.

The reason why there are red and green ink cartridges in the iP8500 is because they permit shades of color that cannot be achieved with the other six colors. If you could produce those shades by mixing some of those six colors, then the priinter would just go ahead and do it without the need for red and green.

I recommend that you buy some red and green cartridges, preferably Canon original. If you are in to refilling, then you need to have at least a couple so that after you replace one, you can refill the empty.

If you are not into refilling, then you should buy some whenever you get the low ink warning so that you can quickly replace an empty one.

Either way, you may be interested in looking at the bottom line of my profile below.

I'd buy red / green ink as well. There is a reason for the printer manufacturers to put 2 additional inkjet cartridges.
