I got my Pro 1 back from Canon Service this week after they reset the fatal error code ($125),
it now switches on and works BUT.:hit

The printer wont attempt any cleaning or purging of the old ink till it knows that there is sufficient ink to carry out the procedure,
it need a minimum of 20% about 60 ml in total.

The reset caused the printer to revert back to its default settings
and now I'll need a new set of cartridges to get it back working again ($400). :rant

Clearly in my case thats my problem (No ink Monitoring)
because all the previous memory has been erased it must have the ink monitoring available to perform this vital start-up operation.

I am hoping to source a set of compatible cartridges cheaper @ $75 from my good buddy Rooney in Maetone inks in China,
I intend to use these cartridges for just the initial start-up and then store them away in case of future accidents. :hu

There is a 3.5 volt button battery in the printer and if it goes flat or is removed that too will
also erase the printer memory requiring a new start-up once again, O for a set of ARC chips.. :barnie

Did Canon tech outline what the problem was?
It would have been good to know also if they tested to make sure it works fine, then it should have been primed and then would accept your empty carts. So I am left to wonder if verification of operation was performed or whether they slipped a new chassis in. Hmm....normally when Epson returns a warranty printer a new set of carts are included because they know that initialization will consume a significant amt of ink.

All of them! LOL
I think they saw the disabled ink monitoring which equals, " someone's been refilling unresettable carts"!
Canon's resetting of the error is being kept a secret I would guess.
Probably used a sort of service program and they would not want us users to know what or how to do it.

Like mikling said seems odd the printer was not returned primed and ready to go.

How do they suppose the average guy would know how to get it going again.

Sounds a bit vindictive to me, or perhaps that was the intention.

I know it is a little different, but when I had a HP head go under warranty they not only sent me a new print head but also a set of standard 364 carts. At least HP were ensuring that I was pleased with their service, and hopefully would continue to use their products.

Like I said, CANON Service very likely saw that ink monitoring had been disabled!! That gave "The Jig" away as to the printer having been refilled. So why should they have been "Friendly"

The Hat had been exploring a way to get at the waste ink tubes and divert them to the outside as we commonly do on Epson printers. Which would have a huge benefit to the rest of all! Unfortunately on re assembly of the printer, it threw and ERROR message. What triggered such a msg? Who knows. Maybe the msg code gives away the cause and so they knew that some tampering had taken place.
I am not blaming The Hat for refilling AT ALL , as that is EXACTLY what I would be doing on the puppy as well! Canon does and apparently did not see it that way.

Your HP head dying while under warrantee is a totally different situation and had it been the PRO-1 head and they saw an un tampered ink monitoring system, I am sure things would have been totally different.
Did you really expect Canon to provide $400 worth of OEM carts and still only charge $125 for the reset? I am not surprised they did not.
$125 repair cost plus $75 for a set of compatibles is a lot less than loosing a gorgeous $999.00 PRO-1

I am just extremely glad that The Hat has his PRO-1 back!

Unless it is a very simple fix, then Hat's got a new printer. My guess.

Well, new printer as in reset to "new" specs. Not mechanically new. He still has the ink monitoring to reset back to normal by popping in a set of carts.

Thank you guys for those few kind words and yes Mike it is still the same printer
both inside and out and the potty is still attached the way I installed it.

I was offered a full service which included a new set of cartridges but declined their offer
because I wasnt prepared to pay $550 just to get the printer back;
as it was $125 for a reset was pricey enough for 5 minutes work.

I was lucky in one respect in that they still actually decided to repaired the printer known full well
that it has been altered and was running on refilled cartridges, they were perfectly within their right to refuse to touch it.

They did ask some awkward questions and only agreed to carry out the work
if I accepted responsibility for any damage that may be caused from not having enough ink in the system,
all the carts were over two thirds full anyway but the printer still refuse to budge for them without the ink monitoring functioning.

When I get it up and running normal like, I will run the Service mode myself again and be able to see what changes were made if any,
I still have a Service mode printout made before I originally balls the printer up..
