Pulled the trigger! I don't see how they can ship the printer and paper to me for only $40! A spare printhead and a buncha carts for only $40! And paper to boot!

I wonder what the shipping cost to the UK would be. The custom duty and VAT might not be that bad. HM Customs at Heathrow airport have an enquiry line, they have been helpful in the past when I imported a AR transmitter/receiver from Atlanta, it turned out much cheaper than a UK price. I guess with a rebate the full price would be the starting point for calculations, and of course you would need an agency in the USA to sell the "secondhand" items!

We still dream of Lidl buying a batch and selling them over here, but I think it is a forlorn hope. We need someone writing a request to LIdl HQ in Germany.

Given the financial pressures that Canon is facing these days...their core business is in transition. I would be surprised that they would retool and introduce a new model so soon. The Pro-100 and and Pro-10 already exhibited some cost savings by retaining the older cartridge body styles....thereby saving costs in the consumables end. The level of shared components between the two is very large. We already saw cost constraints at the Pro9000 and Pro9500 era, these constraints have only gotten heavier with these new models. The same printhead went from the iP8500, i9900 to the Pro9000 and then Pro9000MKII. That might be 8 years or so. Wow that's a long product cycle.

Since the profit margin of OEM cartridge sales is very large to Canon, they are gambling on the strategy that more printers existing in the field will yield good bottom line results to the printing section in the end, despite their initial loss on a rebated sale. We've seen these rebates for over a year or so, so the strategy must be working for them. I don't sense it as a clearout item for a discontinued line....too soon.... maybe a MKII. At least Canon has more alternative markets but many of the other camera mfrs are hurting from the evolution of the digital camera to the good enough embedded camera in smartphones. DSLRs...it is my form belief that they have been good enough for quite a few years. Certainly my aging dSLR is better than my ability. I can't see a newer one bettering my ability as an artist... a poorly skilled one at that. It is now my human ability as a artist that is limiting now.

The desktop printing business at the lower end has also been significantly impacted by social networking technologies and tablet growth as well. The dedicated point and shoot camera market is a fraction of what it was 5 years ago...just crumbs now really.

Times are changing....

Here's a good read that I came across and my thoughts align with the author and is but one reason why my next purchase will be for better glass. I cannot disagree with the opinions stated. Do note that the printers stated in this article only deal with the upper end and we know that the differences at the top end of printers and large formats are really really small. The low end for these guys would be like a 3800 and 3880 and I doubt that "civilians" can tell the difference in output between the two when properly used.

And the more things change, the more they remain the same.

Good glass has always been an integral part of photography. My old Nikon FE2 with its titanium shutter and shutter speed up to 1/4000 of a second was overkill. Controls were wonderfully placed and it shot great pics beyond my talent.

The $40 Pro-100 is a steal.

Received the printer today. Adorama packaged the paper inside the printer box, and one of their catalogs was inside as well.

What a deal! 50 sheets of Canon 13 x 19 semi-gloss paper, plus a spare printhead, and spare carts, all for only $40, with free shipping! I don't see how Adorama can ship a large 60# box from New Jersey to Wyoming for only $40...
