Is there a way I can print with black pigment ink only?
I know I have to select plain paper.

I tried IP1600 it has black cartridge mode, but it makes very bad prints. Because the printer does not allow for better print quality to be set.

You're right, select plain paper, greyscale, high quality printing. See this link.

Why would you use high quality and not just normal instead for type only..

I didn't say I wanted to print grayscale tones, not text. But I would like to use pigment ink.

Well the link tells me that it's impossible to make any pixma printer except fine cartridge models switched to "black cartridge only" mode to print with pigment or only black ink full grayscale tone range. Only the darkest areas will be printed with black ink even on plain paper.

The ip1600 I told you about in my fist post does allow to print only using "black cartridge only", but quality is very bad. I can see the dots on lighter shades.

Can anyone confirm that on ip3000 you can not see the dots very well ? And that the print is really BW? I have unpackaged ip3000, so I will have to wash the head etc. if it fails.

I'm confused.

In your first post, you ask a question and then you answer it. I assume you are looking for more of an answer than the one you gave.

If you tell your printer that you are printing on plain paper and what you are printing consists of only black (for example, black text) then it will only use the pigment black ink cartridge. If what you are printing contains color or shades of grey, then you need to also select grey scale (that just means don't use the color cartridges) and it will use only the pigment black cartridge. If you are printing a picture, it won't look very good unless you also specify high quality.

All this applies only to plain paper. The link I provided explains why the same thing won't work on photo paper.

The black pigment ink contained in all Canon PGI ink cartridges is not for gray tone printing. You can do it but it will not give your a gray scale with a full range of gray tone. You are asking a pair of high heels for jogging. Use dye based photo black ink on coated inkjet paper.

I know where ghwellsjr. is coming from and he is right, and yes I can offer my tupence worth too that I can get more than a dozen shades of grey without the dye black..

Well it seems the turboprint RIP driver for linux is made to force printer print even grayscale :)
I have printed few sheets on ip1200 pigment cart, and 6700D. You just select grayscale mode and it even shows you how much ink was used in last job, so far it shows only black ink being used.

Because it's a RIP driver I doubt it is lying to me. I will however test this after few days. I left prints to dry.
I wonder does ip3000 have more black nozzles than PGI-40 fine cartridge? If so then BW pigment print should be no hard work.

I don't know anything about RIP drivers, I just use the normal Windows/Canon printing features.

The nozzle density on the iP3000 is 600 nozzles per inch which I think is the same as the PG-40.
