The new print head for my Maxify made landfall this week, so I was able to install it today, I was given some tips on how to do the job but as usual foraged ahead ignorantly, not listening..
I had a bit of a job getting the old head out and much the same getting the new one in until I spotted the lever on the left side of the carriageway, I muttered some strange and nasty words under my breath, how the hell could have missed that..
As I had the OEM carts out on the bench, I decided to top 3 of the carts up except the Magenta new cart, but did fit an ARC chip on it, then installed the lot, and after what seemed like an entirety the printer stopped whirring and went quiet.
Were my troubles over, no not likely, I tried printing a nozzle print which sent the printer into one of its huge cleaning cycles and when it finished I was greeted by a B504 error.
Turned off the printer and deleted the print job and restarted the printer after 5 minutes, guess what it did next, it did another huge cleaning cycles and afterward it allow me another go at printing a nozzle print.
But the same thing happen again, the B504 error appeared right on schedule, as I had been onto @Redbrickman earlier, I ask him did he know what this error was, and he said the printer most likely wanted OEM chip cartridges to initialise the new print head..
I install the older compatible carts with OEM chips, and I got another huge cleaning cycle twice, because two of the chips had to be declared empty to proceed, only then I was allowed to print the nozzle print.. Successfully.
The moral of this is when installing any new Canon print head it’s imperative to have a spare set of carts with any old OEM chips on board, otherwise you’re not going to get your printer back working again without the help of the OEM chips..
P.S. I'm getting worse in my old age.. Because this is the second time this has happened..
