Hello, everybody. I'm new here so please excuse any mistakes I make while I tell my story. I've been on the internet for well over a decade and in that time, I've had several printers hooked to my computer. I would always stay with a given printer until it died and costs more to repair than replace. I have grown to prefer Canon printers simply due to accumulated knowledge of their use. And as another by product of that continued use of Canon printers, I tried to buy ones that used BCI-6 and BCI-3e cartridges. As I refined my refilling process, I more often than not, refilled the cartridge while it was still mounted in the printer. I always refilled immediately upon receiving the on screen notice that I was getting low on a certain color so I never ran a cartridge completely dry.
This process served me well for a number of years. Recently, my PIXMA iP3000 died. (the dreaded five yellow blink code that ultimately means a new print head that costs more than I paid for the whole printer). I have a list (from Canon) of all the printers that use my preferred cartridges but after an exhaustive online search, I can't find an affordable replacement printer.
So it looks like I'll have to get a printer that uses a different cartridge. That means I have to start at ground zero and learn a different refilling skill. I'm considering a PIXMA iP3600 because it seems to be near what I'm used to. Now, finally, to my immediate need. Can someone send me a link to or tell me exactly, in great detail, how to refill the cartridges in a PIXMA iP3600. I think it uses CLI-221 and PGI-220 cartridges with chips. I don't know anything about the chips or chip resetters or the ink used, for that matter. I'm a blank slate.......teach me, please.
Thanks for your help.

Canon's website will inform you what type of cartridges your printer requires.

Then you can search the forum (and the web) for refilling tips.

The iP3600 is a nice little printer and the only difference in it and your previous printers is the smaller cartridges and chip.
There will be no great difficulty in filling the 221 cartridges and you can use the same top filling method that your use too.

However you may need to get a resetter for the chip to show your ink levels on screen,
you dont need one but it is essential for peace of mind.

If you are feeling adventurous then you may want to try refilling using the German method

Thanks to both of you for your quick replies. I have ordered the iP3600 I spoke about. I have also been reading a lot on this forum about the German method of refilling. It sounds like the way to go knowing that I'll need to remove the cartridge anyway to reset the chip. And speaking of that....can you steer me toward a website or link to a forum entry that will show me how one is used.
Again, thank you for the helpful advice.

Well, the new printer (iP3600) came in yesterday. I took the old one (iP3000) out and installed the new one today. It prints fine so now I'm waiting for the chip resetter and ink to come in. I've decided to give the German method refill technique a try using a good quality compatable ink when it becomes necessary. Does anyone have any idea how much ink the CLI-221 and PGI-220 cartridges will take in a normal refill immediately after the on screen low ink warning.......you know, how many ml or cc?
Thanks.
