Doing a Google search for "canon 551 resetter" I found this: http://szjingyuan.en.alibaba.com/pr..._for_Canon_PGI550_CLI551_with_reset_chip.html They claim it is remanufactured Canon cartridges with resat chips. I think a remanufactured cartridge is an OEM cartridge that has been professionally cleaned and refilled. If the cartridge is not OEM I think it should be labelled compatible. But maybe this should be taken with a pinch of salt, the Chinese may have an another opinion about what remanufactured means.

be careful sometimes they consider disabling the ink level monitor system as "resetting", the other thing is that they also consider just refilling the sponge simply and not the tank as a "refill". The kits being put out just re saturate the sponge and is compatible for both an XL and standard model. The sponge might be the same but the tank side is generally ignored and with the opaque sides. Who can tell unless you weigh it.

Many of the ink kits, require you invert the cartridge and force the ink ink with a pump. Now what happens to the remaining ink inside? Blocked vents anyone?

I had hoped this meant a resetter was soon to be introduced, but sadly maybe not. I have no intentions of buying the Chinese cartridges.

I guess you are right. Many cartridge vendors seem not to know the difference between a remanufactured cartridge and a compatible cartridge. I have even seen "Compatible, remanufactured cartridges" advertised. In my opinion this must mean a refilled third party cartridge, definitely a "no-no". I also think that remanufacturing must mean a more professional approach than simple home refilling, maybe even done in an improper way. It must involve proper cleaning, refilling, and testing.

I have learned the hard way, that bargain compatible cartridges are not a bargain at all, if they ruin your printer; they killed an iP4200 print head and possibly also the logic board for me. So now I only use Canon OEM cartridges, refilled with IS dye inks and KMP-U pigment ink.

You also omitted to say that some Chinese distributors call a onetime chip, resettable chip;
maybe its just a language thing ? :idunno
