German Method Again

i stopped using the german method several years ago, because i was getting leakage from the needle hole (now people use the foil tape) and at times i would be pushing ink through the vent hole, with the cli carts it was easy to see when the sponge was over filling and the ink was ready to come out the vent hole. however with the newer carts you can not see the sponge area. maybe i was missing something in the steps fpr filling with the needle, what i think needs to be done to prevent the ink from coming out of the vent hole is to cover the vent hole with your thumb while injecting the ink. oh yeah i was slowly injecting the ink with the cartridge upside down. i started this thread as it seemed the other thread was getting too long

On the CLI-221 series when the cartridge is flipped over you can still see the clear "prism" on the underside in between the ink reservoir and the sponge area.

After I have once filled the reservoir and flipped it back over so that it can soak into the sponge, I then top off the reservoir once again. This time I watch the prism area very carefully, you can see when it is full of ink and no longer full of air. Once I see no more air bubbles in the prism area I know that the cartridge is full and needs no more ink. I never have spillage using this method.

I had the same problem that you had, ink being ejected from the German fill hole and the vent hole on the top of the cart. The solution that I found here, or rather the advice that I found here was to WAIT until the printer tells you that the cartrige is empty. If you just top your carts off like I was doing, you take the chance of pushing the ink still in the sponge area out of the vent . Now I wait until the monitor tells me I'm out of ink and haven't had any problems with any type of leakage.

I agree with Mowerman90.
I only refill a cart if it's signaled as empty - I did it first because It seemed that I had to perform more cleanings after the nozzle check when I topped up the other carts.

I top off cartridges all the time and experience no leakage. About 10 cartridges a week, different printers.

I wonder too. It only happened to me once but once was enough for me. I looked like I could be in the "Blue Man Group" because of all the
Cyan I had on my hands
It only happened once and never before or after. I figure I'll just play it safe and do what I was advised and wait till the ink monitor tells me to
refill.

i perfer not to wait until it says empty as there are times i will be gone for several days and other people may be printing alot, as i am the only one that does the filling. think about what i said in the post, cover the vent hole with your thumb, that way any air in the sponge area will act like an air bubble that would have to be compressed preventing any ink from even getting near the vent passage
