I'm a medical student and I used to work in a cartridge company a few years ago.. I have many experiences about refilling cartridges and toners. But as you know, it sometimes doesn't work and may harm your printer if you do not use the right ink or toner. So I suggest you to your competible cartridges when the refill process doesn't work. There are some big companies in my country Goldfill (www.goldkartus.com), Printo etc. and their marketing strategies are not good... They sell competible cartridges only a few euros cheaper than the original cartridges. But I know that, their cost is much much more cheaper than they do sell. I'm interested in about the situation in other countries.

Generally the compatibles are much cheaper than the OEMs no matter whether inkjet cartridges, laser toner cartridges or ribbons.

Original CLI8 costs 17$ and refill 8.4$ but you can refill at a fractions of the cost if you buy ink in 1 litter bottles 43$.

1 cart CLI-8 13ml of ink, = 76 refills from 1 liter bottle at 0.56$ rate for 1 refill versus 8.4$ for local company or 17$ OEM.

For the person who uses an inkjet printer at low volume, They would best buy two ounce containers in a kit. Inkjet inks have a two year shelf life. Some colors appear to be more prone to getting "sludge" - probably microbial growth - that can clog carts and printheads. Small quantities do cost more per ounce, but the savings are still great compared to OEM ink. I would especially advise a starter kit for a person just starting to refill.
