I had a business trip to The USA from The Netherlands. In The US I bought 3 sets of CLI-221 cartridges (M, C, Y, G). When I returned back home and replaced an empty CLI-521 with CLI-221, I got a message from my Canon MP980 that it can not recognize cartridges. I was shocked. Is there any way to use CLI-221 instead of CLI-521 in European model of MP980?

The most obvious way to overcome your dilemma is to remove the US chips and replace them with the EU chips, easy.. :)

The Hat,
Thank you for your soonest response. Is there any manual or advice how to do it?

Majorind ... your situation may be different than mine, so the following may or may not apply.

It appears you are building up an inventory of carts for refilling by purchasing sets of new carts. There are advantages to being the only owner of a cart, and knowing its complete history ... you don't have someone else's junk. But expensive!!!!!

If I were doing it over again, I would build up my refill cart inventory with purchases from eBay of "virgin empty" oem carts. Depending on quantity, $1.00 USD per cart seems typical, including shipping. YMMV.

I had excellent success with purchasing two separate batches of CLI-8 and PGI-5bk carts from inkjetsforeducation@yahoo.com .. Dave put together a specific "Buy It Now" of exactly the combination of carts I wanted. You could try this for 521 carts and not mess with re-chipping. I did purge/flush the carts, but all were clean enough that purging/flushing might not have been necessary. (Sorry for the plug if it was inappropriate ...)

I've read threads on re-chipping strictly out of curiousity, but haven't tried it, and never tempted to try. Consider the source as I'm ignorant on this subject ... but I would be very reluctant to re-chip a cart ... only as a very last resort if you are really "boxed into a corner".

For what it's worth, I had a customer who was from the USA, brought their MP640 (I think it was) over with them and found that they couldn't get the cartridges to work here. They did a quick test with the PGI-220/CLI-221 resetter and found it essentially converted them from European to US chips...

YMMV
