I need some advice
I've got a new Canon MP640
I'd like some recommendations on whether I should go for CISS or refillable empty ink cartridges

I would have said CISS - it's really convenient
But, I've had *really* bad experiences with my MP830
I had a CISS installed. Worked very nicely for 18 months, no problem at all

Then I moved the printer. It wouldn't work again unfortunately :(
I purchased from a seller on eBay who seems to be a massive seller + they seem to have a big and substantial website
They answered one or two emails - but then stopped answering - they told me that I had got air in the system and gave me links to their videos on YouTube showing how to get the air out

No luck - everything I tried, painstakingly following their YouTube videos - nothing worked

In the end... I purchased some empty ink refillable cartridges
These worked great! For another 12 months
Now: the printerhead throws and error and says it's dead :(
No idea what caused this - it was OK before Christmas - stopped using for 10 days - then gone!

Just wanted some view points

Thanks

The consensus is that Canon printers do not work well with CISS. You must have hit the magic configuration for your system that worked for 18 months.

Refilling OEM cartridges is the preferred way to go.

It is not unusual for Canon print heads to simply die after several years of use for no apparent reason. Usually, a new one will fix the problem. This is one reason that I recommend buying a second identical printer when you find one that you like, especially when they go on sale as new models come out, just so that you will not be in a jam at a critical time when your first printer dies for whatever reason. It also helps to have a second printer to diagnose problems by swapping different parts.
