According to druckerchannel.de there are consistent rumours that one large manufacturer of aftermarket carts is most likely to have working chipped aftermarket CLI-8 compatibles shipped before the end of this years. These are not the resetted ones as sold by G&G, but cartridges with chips built from the scratch. If this is true, this is really exciting news. The only problem which might raise is if these cartridges will work with the latest Canon printers (IP3500/4500 etc) as Canon is most likely to join Epson's attempt to re-encrypt the chips/printers, making it much impossible to work with aftermarket chipped carts.

A large amount of reverse engineering must have been done to establish Canon's codes - unless there was access to inside information! That, and the consequent cost of developing a new chip means there can be no cheap solution.

I think the manufacturer would have to pitch his prices not too far short of Canon's OEM to make a profit. Is it likely he will allow his chips to be reset?

A third party chip is not such big news since you can swap chips from an empty OEM Canon catridge. Also, what about the cartridge that this aftermarket chip is attached? Aftermarket cartridges have had difficulty recreating in the reliability and longevity of Canon's OEM cartridges.

The only thing that would be important, especially in light of a possible firmware change from Canon, is whether or not these alledged aftermarket chips can be reset by the consumer (especially at no additional cost) for continued ink usage monitoring by Canon printers.

Could it be secret deal between the European Commision and Canon ? According to EU-rules it is forbidden to apply technology on cartridges making them unable to be recycled on a decent way in order to harm the environment as less as possible. To prevent heavy penalties (like Microsoft, Interbrew, Heineken) it might be: Canon is allowing aftermarket carts to be produced. In exchange Canon is allowed to make newer printers with re-encrypted chips/firmware to have their market protected for the coming years. The EU is happy and Canon is happy.......
