Hi Newbie here,

got a Canon MP 970 printer and whenever I print I get lines across the page, as the printer is printing it sort of stops and starts so I presume thats why i'm getting the lines, can anyone out there help please its spoiling everything I print!!

The first thing to do when you're having a problem is a nozzle check. In fact, you should do a nozzle check periodically, just to avert potential problems. Can you describe what your nozzle check looks like?

Hello Sandie. Welcome to the forum.

Please post an image of a nozzle check. I believe you must weight 24 hours as a new member before you can post it. The nozzle check will give us good information on potential causes for your issue as well as guide us on potential fixes. Post an image of something you have printed out that shows the problem as well.

In the meantime, some questions:

1) What ink are you using?

2) If you refill, what method of refilling?

3) Any error messages or flashing lights on the printer?

4) Which ink colors/cartridges are the problem?

5) How often do you print something? How often do you print something that uses all the ink cartridges?

6) Did the problem occur after not using the printer for an extended amount of time? If so, how long?

7) Did you just notice this problem or has it been happening a while and is it getting worse?

8) Is your purge system working? To find out, open the lid as you would to replace a cartridge. When the print head goes to the center and stops, pull the power plug - do not just hit the power button on the printer. The print head will now stay out of the way while you do the following. Along with a flashlight to see better, use a syringe/needle, long eye dropper, or other tool, to flood the purge pads so that water pools on top of them. The purge pads are found to the right as you look into the printer and are the place the print head parks over when not printing. The two pads are small rectangles that should be blackened from ink. If water does not pool on the pads then let us know that. If water pools on the pads then close the lid and plug the power cord back in. Let the printer go through its power up routine. When that stops, open the lid again and check the purge pads and report what you see - if the water is still pooled or if the purge pads look a little less black and there is no water pooled anymore.

9) What, if anything, have you done to fix the issue?

Until more is known, do not print anything else than nozzle checks unless requested.

Ghwellsjr definitely is an expert. In comparison, the training wheels just came off my big boy bike.
