Hi
I am a newbie here, but it looks a great forum.
I have a new Canon Pixma MP500.
I have searched this forum and find no reference to this printer.
Is it just for the UK?
I have just used up the first 5 PGBK ink tank and was wondering if they are refillable.
It looks like a BCI-3 cartridge (BCI3eBK with the orange 'clip') but does not have the light on it like the others.
I got a 'compatible' and had a message, not recognised, so assumed it was not the correct 'type' as it did not have the light so.
I am new to Canon as I previously had/have a Lexmark P707 and was fed up with the cost of Ink.
If anyone has
a) any information on the MP500
b) can help with the way the ink tank Canon system works etc
c) any knowledge of refilling
I would be very grateful
regards
iandee

You will find lots of references for the ip4200 which takes the same ink carts. These are refillable but you may risk voiding your guarantee as the printer recognizes that the cart in question registered empty and is presumed to still be empty or refilled. So much for Canon's intentions with these new chipped carts. They can be refilled with exactly the same technique as the previous generation of carts - the bci-6 and bci-3ebk. A few of the aftermarket bulk ink vendors now have inks specifically for the new printers. I have seen info about these inks from MIS and Hobbicolors. Participants on this forum who have been refilling these new carts can give you more information than I.

Same cartridges, same printhead, the iP4200 just doesn't have the scan/copy ability, it's only a printer.

PIXMA iP6600D
PIXMA iP6700D
PIXMA MP500

I've read that you can refill them....

the printer will detect that the cart has been refilled, just click through the warning, it will state that your warantee will be void but you can still print. i am considering getting the printer because it uses the same 1 picoliter head as my IP5000 but also adds a photo magenta and photo cyan tank. The only reason i haven't bought the printer yet is I'm still trying to deturmine if the additional 2 tanks actually adds anything in the way of quality to the final printed photo.

Anyone have any experince with the print from a 3 color IP5000 (or any other canon with 1 picoliter dropplets) vs a 5 color (1 picoliter) canon?

My how time flies, but here I am again!
My MP500 does not print now. Well it 'printss' e.g. chuggs along, but nothing comes out on the paper.I have used mainly my refilled cartiridges and now some from Asda that have the chips in.
I have refilled and deep cleaned, doing the normal suggested things.
Searches here are very comprehensive e.g. vacuum filling, hose cleaning etc.
Suggestions are also that 'mere'y a Q tip on the contacts would solve a problem, but I dont know where they are.
Also replacing the print heads - how?
However where do I start.
The MP500 is good and am reluctant to just throw it away.
Any help or references to forum threads?

Did your printer all of a sudden quit printing or did it gradually get worse?

If it quit all of a sudden, this usually means that either the printer or the print head (or maybe even both) have an unfixable electrical problem but it will be very difficult to tell which and you will probably have to discard both.

If the problem crept up on you, maybe losing one color at a time, the problem could be something with some hope of fixing.

Why don't you answer that question for further directions.
