Hello all,

New forum member here and I hope I have my questions on the right forum.

My Pixma MG5220 uses 5 cartridges...four are the CLI-226 series and one is the PGI-225PGBK. I've searched the web trying to find a source for refill ink and a resetter for the chip. The cartridges look very similar to the CLI-8 series and I suspect all but the PGI is dye based. I use this printer for general printing with an occasional photo print direct from the CF card. If someone can steer me to a quality source for ink and a resetter I would greatly appreciate it.

I also have a Canon Pro9000 MKII which uses the CLI-8 cartridges and I use Precision ink for refilling. The CLI-226 caartridges look like the same refill procedure would work.

There is no resetter available yet for the new CLI-226 series cartridges.

The same refill procedures could work, but you cannot see the level of ink in the reservoir because of the opaque cartridges. A scale may be useful when filling these cartridges to check the levels.

As far as quality ink goes...
There are many sources that are good. Hobbicolors, Precision Colors, MIS Ink (Inksupply.com), OCP Inks (Rjjettek) and many others.

Thanks for the reply,

Hobbicolors does not list the CLI-226 cartridge on their website but I have not contacted them about compatability. Precision Colors also does not list the cartridge, but I use their ink exclusively for my CLI-8 refills. I have sent PC an email and await reply.

I've been reliably informed by Image Specialists that the difference in ink between the CLI-8/PGI-5 and the CLI-226/PGI-225 are:

Pigment Black WJ1120 (PGI-5) -> WJ1128 (PGI-225)

Everything else is the same...

... and in case anyone was wondering re: the CLI-8-> CLI-221-> CLI-226
Cyan WJ2032(PGI-5) -> WJ244(CLI-221) -> WJ2032(CLI-226) - Yes it went back

*NB: The WJ code is the Image Specialists reference...

While IS makes great ink, I used to offer the 244 and 2032 and the other so called same colors for these cartridges.....until I realized the color output is not to the standard I would accept. This new inkset from Canon is a very different one. The interplay in the colors are very delicate. Let's say this. A 1% change in the yellow will make a discernable difference on test prints. I spent many many many hours trying to improve the Image Specialists colors by blending a host of different ink colors.
While not perfect....and can we ever expect that from aftermarket ink? .... the standard I achieved was surprisingly good and only on close inspection can you tell the difference between my colors and Canon OEM inks. The results may vary a bit by paper but I used the most commonly used paper with Canon printers .. kirkland Professional Glossy as a base.

In my opinion, Cyan Magenta and Yellow needed revisions and this is what I have done. What was used on the BCI-6 as well as the CLI-8 generation are very different. One might ask if Canon changed the colors to deter aftermarkets suppliers? After spending the hours and hours I did to get the colors so close, I would tend to think so and this was partly their objective.

This is just my opinion as to what was acceptable and I put in the effort to improve the standard offering so that improved output can be had. This is a custom inkset not readily available from Image Specialists and even they don't know what I used, but all the components are all from them.

It's very annoying that colors changed whenever Canon moved from one cartridge system to another. It is difficult, if not impossible, to reprint a photo on a newer printer that copies the colors printed by an older one. If you are shown photos printed on i860, ip4000, ip4300, ip4700, and the latest with a PGI-225 and CLI-226 you will see that they are all different.

There is then the question which is the best or which has the correct colors? If you know all are printed with OEM inks you probably won't ask the question which has the correct colors. But if you are told that all are printed with compatible inks you will definitely start to wonder which has the most accurate colors.

Making custom profiles may help but it may not solve the problem. Mikling, do you mind to give more detail of how you blend IS ink to tweak the colors? To me profiling is a programmable answer to the issue that is not perfect. Blending the ink is equivalent to hard wiring the fix. Does it really address the issue?

I should have looked at the link again. It probably has the answers.
