Hello to all on this board. I love that there is a place devoted to the premise that you should not be ripped-off when you need to buy a little ink. My problem: My Canon mx700 will not power up anymore. I was printing a 16 page document last night and the printer actually died during this print job. As of now, it will not power-up at all. If you have any idea as to whether or not there is some way to reset this printer I would very much like to hear from you. BUT: IF YOU DON'T,

What printer would you buy right now if you had to? I mostly print text documents. MOST of the time (99.9%) I print text doc's that may, or may not, contain color and, frankly, color doesn't matter that much. Mostly, picture quality printing isn't needed, but, very very very OCCASIONALLY, I would like to print a picture that looks like, er, ah, well, like a picture.

I would also want a printer that would allow me to, as EASILY as possible, refill the cartridges at home.

Right now on my local Craiglist I see an mp560. ip9900, an ip4000, and an ip5000.

Would any of these be suitable or should I look elsewhere or even possibly another brand?

Thanks to you all for your consideration!!

You have quite an assortment of printers there. Your MX700 was an all-in-one with ethernet capability. The closest match to that is the mp560 which also has wireless capability. It's a later model that uses a different kind of cartridge but basically refills just like the MX700 except you need a different resetter.

The other printers are older models that don't need a resetter. I think you meant i9900 instead of iP9900, correct? That's a wide format photo printer with eight dye ink cartridges. It does not have a black pigment cartridge for printing on plain paper.

The iP4000 and iP5000 are almost identical with the latter having smaller nozzles.

The main issue with any of these older printers is how much life they have left in them before the "waste ink tank fills" up. Of course you should also make sure they will do a good if not perfect nozzle check because replacement print heads are very expensive.

So the main question is what kind of printer are you looking for?

ghwellsjr,

You are correct, it is an i9900 and it really sounds like it would not be a good fit for me as I don't print very many pictures.

To answer your question about what kind of printer I am looking for, I would say a printer that can also serve as a scanner and that maybe has wireless capability as well. I guess what I am asking is what printer(s) would you suggest that I look for in the used/new market. Are there any new or used multi-function models of any brand on the market that I can refill and that would offer decent quality printing?

Thank you for responding, it is well appreciated!

That pretty much narrows it down to the MP560, if you want to get one of those used printers and if it's a good price and works perfectly. I still have an MX700 and no printers of later vintage or other brands so I really don't have any opinion on any others.

ghwellsjr,

So, just to let you know, I purchased a new mx892 on ebay for $134, no tax, free shipping. And it looks like I will able to refill the carts fairly easily.

Thanks again for your assistance.
