I found one of these printers at the curb, and would like to fix it up to help someone going through a hard time

Don't ask me how, but the previous owner managed to get some sort of dirt/stain under the platen. So I'd need to disassemble the scanner at least enough to get at the glass. Also, one scanner hinge is broken, so I'd need to replace it.

In general, is this a reliable model?
How much effort is it to disassemble it to get to those parts?. I have a service manual, but the process goes across a lot of pages, so it's hard for me to tell.

Finally, is there a way to get the total page count on this printer? The count I got seems to suggest it was just with this cartridge. It read 57, but I'm pretty sure that's not the total page count.

Thanks

Thanks. As I said in my OP, I already have the service manual. But I find this one lengthy, hard to read and sometimes very confusing. The photos are low res, and often out of focus.

I assumed there was a part broken off on the right hinge, because I assumed the two hinges were the same.
Also, I was mistakenly looking at the duplex diagrams, and my MF217w is simplex (which Canon spelled "Sinplex").

On my MF217w, the two hinges are not the same. The left hinge (near the Home button) is a bigger assembly, fastened to the scanner with two screws. Other, DADF models have both left and right hinges like this.

However, on the right side of my MF217w, it appears to be more of a stub with two holes, one on each side. It's also a lot thinner than the left hinge assembly. The right hinge has two plastic holes, one on each side. Into these holes are inserted corresponding left and right plastic nubs on the scanner assembly. Once inserted, the fit seems fairly snug. However, if it came out once...

After reassembly, when you raise the scanner assembly, it wiggles a bit left to right. This is not very confidence-inspiring. I guess I'm, used to more sturdy printers.

In order to get access to the underside of the copy glass, I assume I have to remove the Reader Unit?
