My mother's Canon ip4000 finally gave out after many years of printing lots of pictures so now she needs a new printer. It seems her choices are to buy a new Canon ip4920 which uses the PGI-225/CLI-226 cartridges or new Canon ip4500 on ebay (although a bit expensive) which uses the PGI-5/CLI-8 cartridges.

Are the PGI-225/CLI-226 about half the size of the PGI-5/CLI-8?

Even though the PGI-225/CLI-226 cartridges are smaller is there any reason to think the newer design of the Canon ip4920 would use less ink than the older ip4500?

My mother wouldn't want to refill her own ink carts but is a little worried she would be going through a lot more ink with ip4920's smaller ink cartridges is this a legitimate concern?

1. Yes
2. No
3.Yes

Go for IP4500, it is a better build machine, and ink, compatibles and even original cartridges are cheaper than for 225/226 (at the number of pages per cartridge).

There are no comparisons between the iP4920 and iP4500 each one does things a little different.
The iP4920 is a real photo printer for people who just want to print and go.

The Ip4500 will do anything you throw at it including abuse and
its an ideal printer for someone who wants to do their own refilling.

The iP4920 225/226 cartridges are 20% smaller and not ideal for refilling and
on the + side it is faster with slightly better print quality.

The iP4500 on the hand is more like the iP4000 except with chips added and would be a more a suitable
replacement printer for your Mother but then again she might just prefer the better quality print.

45% = iP4920 and 55% = iP4500 favour for your particular situation.
Mine would be 100% = iP4500 without dough.. :)

Thanks for the help guys I bought my mother a NEW Canon ip4500 on eBay I'm sure she will like it and appreciate not dealing with the smaller cartridges.

There seems to be a lot of Canon OEM PGI-5/ CLI-8 (5 Color) Value Pack's on eBay for a really good price here's one http://www.ebay.com/itm/150673873195?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

I noticed several say "No Expiration Date" is this a bad thing (to be avoided) or does it matter?

As long as there not from fire salvage they should be ok.
There still in sealed packs so should hold their quality indefinitely, I have used cartridges years after
I had purchased them still sealed and they worked the very same just like new.. :)
