Is there a way to enter the service mode to determine if the problem is the print head or the logic board.
Printer was working fine until this light started blinking.

Please help.

Sorry sop the 5 orange lights means that your print head has expired and there is nothing else for it but to replace it, the printer will no longer function with this error till you do..

Top Hat, thanks for your speedy reply to my canon ip 4500 print head problem.
Please advise your opinion.
Should i replace my print head for $70 to $100,
or purchase a new Pro 100 for $98 with mail in rebate currently being offered.
Thanks for your advice.

That’s a no brainer, as much as I love the 4500 the Pro 100 is a much better printing machine it’s very well built, however it doesn’t do Duplex!

So grab the new Pro 100 with both hands at that price (It’s heavy) and enjoy it’s lovely big colour and B&W 13 x 19 prints, 4 x 6, 10 x 8 and all the other sizes it can do, you’ll be amazed at the quality.:love

Now if you’re a smart ass like me you’ll come up with a cunning way of getting the 4500 running again, I know I couldn’t just leave it without a print head, I’d find some lame excuse to justify the cost later !, then you’ll be half way to becoming a print hoarder like the rest of us.. :ya

Hi does the orange light flashing on any canon ip mean it is destined for recycling? I have been looking at the After school clubs Canon pixma ip3600 printer which has been left standing for a few months. Now when you turn it on flashes the green and orange alternatly and doesn't print at all! The inks have been changed but no luck. when the inks are in the position to replace all the inks have a red light by them is that right?
Any help appreciated. Thanks.,

Hi Kath

The pattern of the green and orange blinks is a code giving the type of error. So what is the blink pattern? Some error codes are common for many printers; 5 yellow or orange blinks often means that the print head is defective.

To decipher the code you need the service manual for the Pixma 3600: ftp://mail.racs.co.bw/Canon/Bubble Jet Printers/IP RANGE/IP3500/ip3600-ssm.pdf

See pages 5/17-7/17 incl for error codes and blink patterns.

The red lights on the cartridges in the change position is OK, it means that cartridges contain a sufficient amount of ink. When a cartridge is low on ink the red light on that cartridge is flashing, an no light means the cartridge is empty.

For clarity reasons, could you please start a new thread after having determined the blink pattern? Else things get complicated, Is an answer related to your post or the OP's question?

Hi sop

As the printer is defective, I think you cannot enter service mode, and service mode would be of no use as the printer is used to print the info from service mode operations.

But you find the procedure for service mode operations in this simplified service manual with parts catalog: http://www.gotocommerce.com/free_ma...s/data/Canon iP4500 - Service Manual {EN}.pdf

There is an error in the service manual regarding service mode operations, so read this warning before using service mode: http://www.printerknowledge.com/threads/warning-error-in-some-canon-service-manuals.6388/

Being of the PGI-5/CLI-8 generation the iP4500 is one of the last high build quality printers for home use from Canon, so maybe it would be worth searching for a print head? The parts number for the print head is: QY6-0067-000

hi, phil here.
i wish to share some good news for anyone who lands on this thread.
i have today solved my 5 orange flashes on my ip4500 printer.
the 5 flashes happened suddenly. i checked my carts. 2 were completely empty.
i ordered some chipped carts on ebay. put them in.
red lights stayed on, so carts were accepted.
however 5 flashes remained.
removed carts. removed printhead. switched off. switched on. still 5 flashes.
removed carts. removed printhead. there was a lot of ink residue around.
cleaned with isoprpyl alcohol using cotton wool bud and tissue paper.
cleaned contacts etc. visually inspected printhead. looked ok. replaced into printer.
did not install carts. shut cover. it went through alignment etc. settled. solid green. no flashes.
installed carts. job done.
i think the lesson is this. if the printhed looks ok on visual inspection. ie no burnt out contacts on the brown ribbon, no burning anywhere else the printhead is probably fine. a thoruogh cleaning regimen is the answer. be persistent. keep cleaning until it works.

Hi phil

It seems you had a very lucky escape so congratulations are in order because 5 Orange lights usually mean the print head has expired.

I would keep a good eye on your printer over the next few days because this problem has a nasty habit of returning when you least expect it too, I just hope it doesn’t for your sake.
Happy Printing.:thumbsup
