Can someone out there tell me how to get the waste tank out of the Canon i9100 so I can clean it? I have the cover off and am pretty handy, but can't figure out for the life of me even where to begin to remove the waste tank. I already have the reset code for this model and don't want to spend another $100 on having the tank replaced/cleaned (already spent $100 on a new print head last year). I'm hoping someone out there has done this before and can be of service.

Love this printer but have the 10# sledge hammer ready...just in case. :/

You did not state the reason for the effort to clean the waste tank. Some printers give the blinking orange light warning when it is not the overflow tank. Several posts on this site mention that the tank is very rarely full, or in a state to compromise operation.

I got the flashing orange light and the message pops up that the waste tank is almost full. The message window advises that I have the waste tank "replaced". If I can simply do the reset code without cleaning the pads I would be satisfied with that, but I was concerned if I did not clean the pads or have them replaced it would cause my printer to produce smudged or bad prints. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated because frankly I don't relish the thought of disassembling the printer to get at the tank or the thought of spending another $100 on it.

Thanks!

I checked out the link that Grandad 35 directed me to and by golly it was a lot easier than I ever imagined! My pad is clean, dry, and replaced and the computer is back together...but now I have another problem.

I've done the reset code as directed at http://www.neilslade.com/Papers/inkjetstuff11.html and the printer is on with the light a steady green indicating that it's ready for action. However, when I try to print a test page I get the status window that says "checking printer status" and then an error window that says that the document failed to print because the printer is not responding.

I hate to be a pain but any further suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Liz

The connection between the printer and the host computer is bi-directional. The computer sends a message at the start of the print job to ask if the printer is ready to take the page data. It often happens, and drives one crazy, that the printer does not respond. There can be a lot of reasons for this. In your spot I would a) turn off printer; 2) shut down computer; 3) power up printer; 4) power on computer; try test print again. If that does not work, delete the priinter from control panel/printers and go through the same sequence again. Make sure that you have only one instance of the printer driver, as old ones can have a bad name or other defect. If the operating system does not "see" new hardware install the the printer manually from control panel/printers. If these ideas do not work we have to go back to the possibility that the print head was in fact responsible for all your problems. In my case I scrapped the printer. Make sure that you are using the most recent version of the driver. With all these problems we need to set for ourselves a time limit after which we cut losses and go a different way. See your printer documentation for the installation sequence, as some printers require the driver install before powering on the printer.

It's the craziest thing. I was up until almost 5 am this morning trying to get the printer to work. I finally had enough and turned everything off before bed. Got up this morning and turned stuff back on and tried to print. Lo and behold the printer worked just like it's supposed to! I guess it was "tired" too and just needed some rest! This is wonderful! Not only did I save $100 by cleaning the waste tank pad and resetting it myself, but my trusty ole i9100 is back in business!

Thank all of you for all of your help and suggestions!

Alexan44, the printer was not tired,... Ha Ha Ha... It was just hung up in some mode with an error message that you couldn't see. If you would have gone to the Control Panel, selected "printers & Faxes" and then selected your printer and "Opened" it, you would see that it was busy trying to get a response from some error. It won't do anything until the last pending commuincations error is cleared. All Canon printers do that.

When you turned your PC off and the printer, this error was reset the next time you turned the printer on.

I'm learning the hard way. As a dear friend of mine once told me -WHATEVER DOESN'T KILL YOU ONLY MAKES YOU STRONGER! I am firmly becoming a true believer in that little bit of philosophy and am now ready to take on my next challenge, whatever that may be. I thank you all again for the great input and most of all for saving me a nice chunk of change! I will definitely be checking back for more suggestions and timely tips as new problems arise, and I'm sure they will.

Kudos to all of you out there willing to help those of us who are a bit illiterate in this area!

Liz :)
