There seems to be a lot of discussion about chip re-setters, transfering chips etc.
Am I missing something?
Why go after the chip??
There is a program in memory inside the printer that reads the chip data.
Why not alter that code so that the printer doesn't care what data the chip returns?
After all, if Canon can upgrade that firmware, why cant we?

A lot of questions - I may be all wet - but computer programers reverse engineer very complex programs every day.

Just my two cents.

It's called the firmware of the printer usually stored in a flash chip in the printer. It's copyrighted. You have to rewrite the whole thing and reprogram the flash with it. If you only modify the code you violate the copyright. You can put it up on the web for free. But you may need to put it up on a Russian web.
