I've been using the regular size 250 PGBK for my ip8720 but today I bought a 250 PGBK XL and it is exactly the same size as the regular cartridge so I'm wondering how it can have significantly more ink. If anyone knows the answer, please tell me. I don't like thinking I may have paid about $12 more for nothing but hype.

The cartridges have compartments for liquid ink and sponge compartments. The XL cartridges hold more liquid ink than the standard cartridges, so you get a higher page yield from the XL cartridges, maybe you can print double the number of pages with the XL cartridges.

See this thread and this post for more info about the cartridge capacities. The 550/551 cartridges are identical to the 250/251 cartridges except for the chip. They are just intended for use in Europe in stead of North America.
