Hi.

I have an HP Envy 120e and an Epson Stylus SX525WD

I have a few bottles of colour ink from ebay, that i bought for my Epson SX525WD

Can i use the ink in my HP Envy 120e

Or do they use Dye vs Pigment or some other difference, viscosity's ect.

Thanks

John.

Why don't you try it and tell us? People don't believe the answers we give anyway.

What I can tell you for sure is that HP and Epson print heads are based on totally different principles. An HP printer literally boils the ink and creates a tiny bubble for each little dot on the paper. Consequently, there are very specific ink requirements, and an HP printer is unlikely to work well with Epson ink.

But nobody knows unless you try it. You could be lucky. Or you could ruin the print head.

Canon and HP use a thermal printhead in which heat pulses vaporate a tiny amount of ink, and that gas bubble ejects the ink. This needs to be finetuned - the heat amount from an electrical puls and a phyiscal property of the ink liquid how much energy is needed to vaporate that much ink, this specific energy is a physical characteristic of the solvent, and this can vary very much between different mixtures of solvents. I admit and would not tell everybody, but I was testing that long time ago - Epson dye ink did not work in a Canon, but the other way around it does, I was using up Canon and HP ink leftovers in Epson printers, but I mixed them 1:1 with Epson ink, but all these were dye inks. Your Epson uses normally pigment inks, that may complicate the matter, I wold not try it in this case in an HP, I remember that I saw some chemical reaction when mixing different yellow inks creating a fallout in the bottle and cartridge, and that would be pretty difficult to remove from a printhead. So in your case I would not test it unless you have a spare unit to spoil, in case of a failure

Well since i would be putting Epson ink in an Empty HP cartridge which has the print head built in, what damage can be done to the printer apart from an ink leak, I will most likely just get some third-party HP colour inks, they are not that expensive anyway.

Thanks

John.

Just in case you're interested, then here is my own experience putting Epson ink in HP cartridges and the consequences: http://www.printerknowledge.com/threads/hp-deskjet-ink-advantage-5525-hp-685.8193/

You can try it yourself as well ;) It would cost anything from the price of a new ink cartridge (for those with integrated printhead) to the price of a new printhead (for those using ink tank with replaceable printhead), to the price of a new printer! :D

You can use Canon/HP/Epson type inks in all Epson's and Brother's (piezo), but for Canon/HP you will have to use Canon or HP types of ink (bubblejet). So Piezo print head based printers (Epson/Brother) can actually deal with most types of inks, as the print head doesn't boil the ink. Colors may be off, but that is another problem.

It never hurts to experiment a little, but when you get it wrong it can get very expensive, as others have said, don’t try Epson ink in your HP printer.. :hit

Depends on the printer type....

Me personally if the printer i was trying had the print head built into the cart id put any brand (well by any brand i mean within reason/common sense) ink in it. Worst that is likely to happen is it fries the ink head on the cart.... Unless im wrong or missing something?

If the print head is built into the printer then use proper ink designed for that specific printer. Or risk a expensive and/or difficult to replace/repair job.
