that's a pretty good price - I see a current conversion rate of 77 R to 1 €, you pay in Germany 10 - 11€ for CLI-8 cartridges. How much ink volume can you actually pull from such cartridges - mainly from the reservoir ?

I didn't think of extracting ink out of them. As far as I understand, after replacing chips with ones from empty CLI-42 carts it will be possible just to use these modified CLI-8 carts in a Pro-100/100s straightaway. No mess with refilling and it'll be genuine Canon inks with very good fade resistance. The two things that make me hesitate are that such inks may lead to some sort of a color cast in prints or they can be harmful to the printhead.

Surely, I could buy a used Pro9000 printer just for such cheap carts but I suppose that a Pro-100 can make better prints. A few months ago I bought a used Pro9500 II with lots of carts as well. It's a pigment printer of that era too. I was blown away by the inferior quality of its prints in comparison to my Pro-100 prints! Now I don't know what to do with it and more than 100 OEM PGI-9 carts :) I wouldn't like to repeat this bad scenario again :)

If you use CLI-8 inks in your PRO-100, the printhead won't be damaged but, unless you use custom profiles or tune the color settings of the driver, you'll get prints with a noticeable color cast. The individual color shades of the CLI-8 inkset are quite different from the CLI-42.
Of course you must reset the chips of those empty CLI-42 carts or your Pro-100 won't let you print unless you disable ink monitoring (which I don't advice ).

It's great news, thank you! And where one can find the clear ink base or is it just distilled water?
So, do I understand correctly that the C, PC, M, PM, Y, BK inks in CLI-8 carts are about the same as the inks in CLI-42?
Clear ink base formula:

propylene glycol 5 gram
alcohol 96% (denaturated) 30 gram
isopropanol 15 gram
distillled water up to 100 gram

For making LM/LC/LG: 30 parts of M/C/G mixed with 70 parts of CIB (Clear Ink Base)

Actually all the colours of the CLI-42 are reformulated (probably using other dye stuff) and not the same ink, but you can use them in your Pro-100 (exchange the chip of the CLI-8 carts with CLI-42 chips).

Thank you for all your comments! To be honest, I hoped that someone would write that some of the CLI-8 inks are fully identical to CLI-42 ones. That would make it possible to swap that carts without any hassle with profiling at all. However, now I'm sure that I can always go for a very good substitute without making any harm to my printer.

Another thought has come to my mind. What if extract the ink from other Chromaplus 100+ carts and then use it for refilling CLI-42 carts? Do you not know whether the C M Y BK GY inks in carts like CLI-521 are identical to the corresponding inks of CLI-42 carts? The prices of other Chromalife 100+ carts are still much cheaper here (I know that they contain only 9 ml of inks) than CLI-42 ones.

Extracting the ink from the CLl-8 carts or any other small cart is a waste of time, because there is only 4 to 5 ml of ink available in the reservoir, the ink in the sponge can’t be extracted, chip swapping is the most practical..
Swapping chips instead of extracting and refilling ink is easier for sure. However, we all know that Chromalife 100+ inks are overall better than ordinary Chromalife 100 inks.
I was going to extract the inks with the help of syringes. I guess that the most part of the inks will be extracted quite easily this way.

There is approx. 15 ml of ink inside the cart and only 4 to 5 ml in the reservoir, so by using your reckoning, your losing 8 or 9 ml, of ink that’s not good economics..
