what you see is what you get would be nice. after reading the threads about profiles, i wonder if the monitor needs to be calibrated first and if so how do you go about it

I recommend the purchase of the Colormunki photo, this single device will calibrate both your monitor and printer. The Spyder3 system has a separate device for the monitor and the printer, the monitor device performed well--the printer device did not, I had to repeat measurements far too frequently and the resultant print profiles exhibited color casts. I then bought the Colormunki and placed the Spyders back into their webs.

I am a serious hobbyist, not a pro printer, these higher entry level devices are more than adequate for my needs.

Irv, good thing you weren't around here a few years back when I was thinking about getting a Colormunki - http://www.nifty-stuff.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=3367. You might not have bought one.

The Eye One Display 2 I bought from the superb folks at http://www.spectracal.com/ has been well worth the added cost of their CalMAN custom software and spec'ed calorimeter (bought during a great sale). They now sell Colormunki with their customized software, but the price is astronomical! Yikes!
