Open the printer Properties and in printer Setup choose the greyscale option and then hit print.. :)

All of them! LOL
Just being picky!

You do not print Black and White unless you actually are using Clack and While inks.
You print with black ink on white paper.

Sorry! As I said, just being picky.

Every program where is printing option can be specified to a monochrome printing.

That is true, but are you sure that the printer doesn't use the C/M/Y inks if you don't use the "plain paper" settings? As such, you may still have a color cast.

I printed a 462 page Kawasaki service manual last week with lots of black and white photos in it. It was a PDF document.

Settings on my MG6120 were standard quality, 2 per page, duplex, greyscale and plain paper. It seemed to almost suck my grey color cartrige dry and barely used a fifth of my PGBK cart. I don't conclude anything from this but that was my observation.

The OP has an i850, which doesn't have a gray ink.

It is quite difficult to get a real neutral black/grayscale print with most inkjet printers, especially in the generation of the i850. There are several printers now with gray inks, and I've seen full black/gray inksets for some Epson printers. Do I recall that Mikling did some experimenting with dilution of black inks to create sucn an inkset for Canon printers?

I do get closer to a neutral black with my ip5000 printer than with my i960 printer. I use the same exact cmyk inks, but the i960 had the additional photo magenta and photo cyan inks. When purging the black dye-based ink carts I do see a purple tint as the ink becomes more diluted. It is not jet black.
