In my ongoing effort to fix my non-black-printing Artisan 810, I've decided to try a manual purge-and-prime technique. To do so, ideally, I would release (unlock) the carriage in order to put paper towels in the center of the platen to catch cleaning fluid and waste ink. I've got a service manual for the Artisan 800 (very similar chassis), but no simple technique is given therein. I've seen evidence on YouTube that it should be straightforward to unlock the carriage for this printer, but again no technique is shown.

So, how does one unlock the carriage on an Artisan 810, or similar printer, without completely disassembling the beast?

Did you try using the change cartridge procedure then pulling the power lead out when the carriage has moved out of the way?

On the Artisan 810, the cartridges do not move with the printhead / carriage. But this is the kind of technique for which I am looking.

Try inducing a cleaning cycle or printing a nozzle check then when the print head moves
anywhere near the centre on the carriageway just pull the power plug.

That will get its attention and youll be free to work on it as long as you please.. :)
