I found this post: http://www.nifty-stuff.com/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=9910#p9910 . Following the link and typing "CLI" I got this this: http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/about...age&criteria=1&filter=3&keywords=CLI&x=28&y=7 . Clicking the link for CLI-8Y gave this MSDS: http://www.usa.canon.com/cpr/pdf/MSDS/IC1456_0202.pdf .

Water is 60-80% so it is water based. Technically speaking glycerine and diethylene glycol are alcohols but normally not called so in daily speak and they only amount to 5-10% each, so most of the ink is water. In my opinion for the ink to called alcohol based, a more common alcohol like etanol (potable alcohol) or iso propyl alcohol should be the main constituent.

If the ink was alcohol based it would be obvious from the smell, and the ink has no characteristic smell.

That's the first thing that came to my mind. But has anybody tried to burn an ink drop that's not on a paper of course :)

I haven't done that test but page 4 of the MSDS has : Flammability: Neither flammable nor combustible.

I think that if the ink was alcohol based, with an alcohol content of 60-80% it would be flammable and and had to be marked so.
