Hi - new to forum, and desperate to know if I've bought a "pig in a poke" with this printer. I KNOW they all recommend we don't use compatibles, but when you're on benefit-only income, and you've just errantly bought a printer whose original cartridges come in at half the cost of the printer and compatibles only slightly less again, you don't have so much choice not to.

Printer in question is just 6 weeks old (but out of warranty from Amazon) and I had to change cartridges about 3 weeks in (I do a LOT of colour printing). Coming from an Epson which had absolutely no problems whatsoever with using compatibles, I've been really surprised that this Canon just does not seem to like them in the least. 3 out of 5 prints will result in an "Unrecognised cartridge" error msg which requires me to just reset the cartridge to resolve each time - success is variable - sometimes it only takes 1 such reset for it to print, other times 2 or 3, and then it can sometimes go 2-3 prints before the error will flag up again. It also varies as to which cartridge it complains about - and actually I realised today it's not just the compatibles. It looked as if it was more the fact that the (original) cartridge was about out of ink and that was what was provoking the error msg.

So now that I'm sort of stuck with it and actually do love it in every other way, I'm desperate to find out whether this is something these printers are known for, or whether it actually does have a fault I might need to look at fixing.

Appreciate any input from anyone with experience of this model or similar.
Using the printer with Windows 7 and updated drivers etc.

Thanks

The most economical route is to refill your original cartridges using quality refill ink. There is a wealth of information on this forum about how to do this. Start by reading the "FAQ".

These printers CAN be refilled successfully.

If you do not want to refill, my father has been using cartridges from the following seller on eBay inkjets101 for about 4 months now. The colors are virtually identical to the OEM cartridges and there have been no clogging problems or other problems to speak of. They are not the cheapest compatibles around, but they have worked very well. I am sure there are others that work well but these are the only ones I can vouch for.

You can also buy just the pigment black etc.

I hope this helps!

Hi - appreciate your input and will certainly look into those cartridges shortly. I've no objection to refilling them either, but my concern is to whether there's maybe a fault in the cartridge holder that's provoking this constant error msg - wouldn't mind if it only happened when the ink was very low even, but it starts as soon as the cartridge is put in and carries on to the bitter end - hugely frustrating. And if it IS the cartridge holder, then is it likely to be feasible to consider buying a replacement of that, or am I likely to run into the same problem. It's not something I've found anyone else mentioning which is why I'm concerned.

Anyone else have any knowledge on it? Thanks.

RMM is right refilling the original cartridges is the cheapest way to go with quality ink, but you will need a resetter.
Do this and your problems will be few..

Hi - thanks so much for this link - it's the exact sort of info I wanted as it at least gives me an idea why the problem is arising and how best to overcome it - looks like I'll be going down the refill route from here on - unfortunately only have 2 of my OEM cartridges left, but hoping I can pick up some singles cheap somewhere for the others. Proving a hugely expensive printer this all round :(

Thanks again.
