Thank you for the reactions, guys. Here is my comment:
I too noticed the good results with pigment ink on matte papers. On my wall there are some prints on matte paper in a glass frame. The glass makes them look glossy anyway.
Maybe the use of pigment printers made luster papers so popular.
But...

After I dumped my 6 color printer I'm not enthusiastic about printers with more cartridges than the usual 4. Some of the printers you mention have 9 cartridges!. It means more cartridges to fill, more nozzles to get clogged, etc. Manufacturers are satisfied, because more cartridges to sell...
Colors are substantially better on dye ink prints. I did a home test, it can be found here:

Photos won't fade as long as you keep them in a box or an album.:)
We all know that pigment ink is much light faster than dye ink. But no one talks about the print quality of pigment ink prints.
Now I printed the same photo on two printers: An Epson R245 dye printer and an Epson B40W Durabrite Ultra printer with pigment ink. Both printers were loaded with OEM...
This is very useful information, Emulator. I think we should avoid photo paper that is too white. Quality papers are usually a bit creamy.
Not on the list is Ilford paper, and I'm pretty sure no brightener is used on that. I also mention Canon Pro PR101, which is not too white and gives good...
LOL!
Not long ago I drilled a hole on top of a cart and filled it. I covered the hole with tape and then the chip needed resetting. To reset the chip the cartridge was held upside down to see the LED turn green. What happened?
Lots of ink left the cartridge and leaked past the tape ON MY HANDS...
Latex gloves at Aldi starting Saturday 25-05-2013. Price 4.99 for 100 pieces.
Presumable also at Aldi stores in other countries.
These gloves are meant for medical use, but we have a better purpose for them of course!
Two sizes, M and L...
Epson Netherlands and probably also in other countries offers two packages paper for the price of one. There are no shipping costs in Netherlands and Germany.
The 'no shipping costs' makes the offer worth wile.

I use Ilford Galerie smooth gloss paper and it's the best paper I've tried.
The results are fine on both my dye and my pigment ink printers.
The gloss is not too high, which combines very well with the K3 pigment ink (by OCP).
Skin tones are very good, better than Epson premium glossy paper...
The draft setting is usually not choosen for the lower ink consumption. The printer just prints much quicker in the draft setting.
My B40W printer shoots out the prints so fast in draft, the user better keep away from the output tray! :D
Costadinos: Good idea to use another reader. Maybe I'll...

Not long ago I owned an Epson 1290 so I can say it's a good choice. I like the fact that printers of that generation only need two cartridges, which is less costly than a set of 6.
You might invest in a set of cleaning cartridges, to keep the nozzles clean. No big costs, for you only need two...
It's a good thing to buy printers on ebay. Here's another tip
Install WIC reset on your laptop and view the waste ink counters. It gives an insight on how much the printer is used. It's like the mileage of a car.
Of course a printer can print way beyond 100% of the waste ink counter, but we...
New here. I live in the Hague, Netherlands.
I've got only Epson printers at the moment.
Printers in my possession: Epson B40W, Epson R245, Epson Picturemate 100, Epson D68, Epson 895.
Printers that went lost in the battle: Epson 870, Canon S750, Epson 1290s, Epson 915, Epson D120
When you order cartridges a few days before Easter and then have to wait much too long for the delivery and you can't understand why the seller thinks Easter is more important than ink.
Old thread, but I still want to mention my experience with gray inks.
I wanted to print real good black and white photo's in which no color ink was used. So I bought a set of empty refill carts for my old Epson D68 photo Edition.
The D68 is a pigment printer, so I assumed it would work well...
Thank you for the reactions!
cls: The printer is not a durabrite printer. Actually it's an Epson Photo 895, so it's vintage. One of the first generation printers that prints photo's from a CF-card without being connected to a PC. It's build for use with 6 colors dye ink, so I bought this ink...
Same problem here. I managed to get my vintage printer in working order and I bought ink that is made for the T007/T008 carts. The ink is called 'UV INK' and it is the dye type. Although the ink is sold and priced as premium quality some of the printer nozzles get clogged. I've used cleaning...
