I gave my niece and her husband an MP780 but they have 64-bit Windows 7 and the downloaded driver from Canon won't recognize the printer when it asks for it to be plugged in. It does recognize the scanner. Anyone know a workaround or fix?

The nozzles do fire, at least part of the time, during cleaning cycles but I'm surprised that that very small amount of nozzle firing would overheat the print head to the point of burning it out. Yes, there probably have been many that made a false diagnosis and I was among them. If I hadn't believed that false diagnosis I wouldn't have been motivated to clean up another printer and discover that the purge system didn't behave as I expected. I still have plans to take apart another...

The two tubes that are closer to the front of the printer go down through the peristaltic pump and out the bottom into the "ink waste tank" which is really a bunch of ink absorber pads that go all across the bottom of the printer. The other two tubes that are closer to the rear of the printer...

That pretty much narrows it down to the MP560, if you want to get one of those used printers and if it's a good price and works perfectly. I still have an MX700 and no printers of later vintage or other brands so I really don't have any opinion on any others.
