Thanks for all the responses and explaining things in detail I wasn't sure when to refill the carts. I wasn't aware of the optical sensing system I will continue to use the cartridges until they read empty like I've always done with new Canon retail cartridges and then refill/reset chip.

The only reason I decided to aim for 75% full was because of Martin's tutorial on his OctoInkjet website but I actually ended up filling the cartridges closer to 80-85% (in the future I may try pushing it to 90-95%).
