The Canon replacement print head has been installed, and all is back to normal, indeed very good with (as yoiu would expect) a perfect nozzle check pattern .

So, I think I'd go for a known good printhead from Peter's link [thanks!].
But the question is whether to spend on the part, or go for a new printer/scanner, and if so , which?
Just out of interest, how can you tell it's not a clog in part of the printhead?
What are the risks in buying a compatible printhead such as this:-?

This is over-contrasty compared with teh original pdf scan, but is accurate for the purpose here.

Try these: only very slightly fuzzier than the first scans. I may try again, and put them in pdfs...
