Neil,
The refill problem with the rubber plugs can be easily overcome by using a nylon or stainless steel screw to seal the opening. I prefer 10-32 nylon (because I have a large supply) screws and Fotofreek prefers self tapping stainless steel, but either one works fine. For those who don't...
Rob,
I agree 100% with what you wrote about the BCI-3ebk with the ArrowJet cartridges. I noticed the same thing. I suspect that the factory did not use the correct Formulabs ink (as they claim to) and instead filled the tanks with a different formulation and/or brand of ink. After I refilled the...
Nelda,
HobbiColors definitely has a refill kit for the iP5000. The iP4000 and i860 also use the same kit.

Here are my suggestions:
1.- Order a refill set of HobbiColors empty cartridges w/ink from www.hobbicolors.com (eBay search on HobbiColors) or Formulabs ink and empty cartridges from www.alotofthings.com. (HC is less expensive. I use both inks and they are both excellent).
2.- Save what is left...
It wouldn't hurt anything to try the tape and if that doesn't work to then use whiteout. I like your way of using Formica and signboard for the trays. They should be much more durable than using cardboard. How about posting a photo or two of the completed units? If you are happy with using...
At one time alotofthings.com did state on their website that ArrowJet cartridges used Formulabs ink, however they later found out that ArrowJet (Jet Young) was also using OCP inks and they no longer guarantee that the cartridges are filled with Formulabs ink. They do state that all their bulk...
If they gave you any interesting tidbits, can you pass them along without violating any confidences? Be sure to let us know how the ink and CIS work out.
What FRUSTRATION!!! Fry's always seems to have great deals on good stuff and all I have around here is Circuit City and (Not the) BestBuy. Even though I'm now eaten up with envy I say go for it and get a bunch of them. I bought a couple last summer online and they are great little printers. I...
I thought the same same before I read the I/S Distributor Terms and Conditions. The following is a direct quote from their web site.
8. The distributor agrees not to sell or promote competitive products and undertakes not to substitute alternative products for Image Specialists, Inc. products...
One of the recurring questions I've seen in inkjet forums is "Who makes the ink I'm using to refill?" I've done some exhaustive searching on Google as to the source of bulk inks for Canon printers in the United States and here is what I came up with.
The following is specific to Canon printers...
The HobbiColors screws are a little too small to be easily handled. That's why I like using the larger 10-32 nylon screws. Much easier to handle. I've suggested to David at H/C that they go up to a larger size screw to make handling a little easier. BTW: why are you using rubber gloves? You know...
Refilling by CIS or syringe is a completely responsible action. It makes perfect sense not only on an economic basis but from an environmental standpoint as well. I'm not a tree hugger, but I do hate to see natural resources wasted or misused. To make and then dispose of all the plastic in ink...
I never paid any attention to the Google toolbar that displays on my IE window, but it includes a spell checker that works fine with the reply box here on Nifty-Stuff. I guess this shows how easily the most simple of solutions can be overlooked.
Below is a link to a refilling setup I concocted last summer. While the yorker cap bottles I used are very inexpensive at less than 30 each including the tubing, they do require more pressure to squeeze the ink through the very fine diameter tubing. Perhaps if I'd purchased CIS tubing from MIS...
What you are describing on the 4x6 paper is known as microporous coating. Microporous papers (a.k.a. instant dry) are highly water resistant, but do suffer a bit when it comes to gas fading. The other type of inkjet paper is known as swellable polymer. It is more resistant to fading, but suffers...
I see inkjet technology as something that will be around for quite some time. Maybe not in its present form, but in a more advanced state. Just look at the advancements made in the past decade. Print head technology will continue to improve, but I question how much better it really needs to be...
Be sure the refurb is in a Canon refurb box. If it is, it will have a new print head and full set of Canon ink cartridges. At that price you shouldn't go wrong. The iP4000 is a great little printer. I'm completely satisfied with the one I have.
