I'd like to read that. What other thread are you referring to? What would I search for to find it?

    Canon planned obsolesence?

Based on some bad personal experience, I'm getting the impression that within the last 4 or 5 years Canon has designed their print heads to last a relatively short time, after which that failure disables the entire machine. Did I just have bad luck, or are you guys getting limited usage out of...

I looked at the Espon Artisan 730 (the US equivalent) but it got bad reviews on text printing at PC Magazine http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2399616,00.asp "Cons Subpar text. Output on plain paper looks faded. Low paper capacity." I do much more text printing than photos, so text quality...

    Which new printer?

Over in the Canon forum, one responder recommended an Epson Artisan 730 all in one. I see from the review at PC Magazine that its text printing isn't so good. "Cons: Subpar text. Output on plain paper looks faded. Low paper capacity." I do value good text, so this might not be a good choice...

Although this is the Canon forum, do you have any recommendations on a model of Epson printer? After your post, I added a similar query on the Epson forum since I don't know if the Epson and Canon people read both groups. I'm still open for suggestions on either manufacturer. From some...

    Which new printer?

Nothing wrong with his advice. I took it * and I'm now adding a query here in order to see what models of Epson are refillable, produce good quality results, and print directly to CD's. I've been reading some of the old posts, but it's difficult to know what search words to use to answer my...

    Which new printer?

I've been a long time Canon user, but the last printer died in just under 4 years. Someone in the Canon forum suggested I look at Epsons because of the reliability of the piezo print heads. Here are the features I want: It must have easily refillable ink cartridges. (i.e. Canons are easy, HP...

My Pixma MP610 all in one died - got the fatal wrong print head error message after which the switch won't turn the printer on. Nuts. Here are the things I'm mulling over. The new one must have refillable cartridges. I'd like to make use of the stock of CLI-8 cartridges and resetter I have...

    Recommend New Canon Printer

Thanks for the advice guys. After getting your suggesions and looking around the forum I discovered that the MP610 is the same as an i4500 with a scanner attached. The ip4500 printers were more expensive than the MP610 All In One machines. NewEgg has refurbished MP610's for $55, and since one...

    Recommend New Canon Printer

Thanks Pharmacist. I note that the Pixma 4000 is no longer available except used - at least at Amazon. It uses 3 colors and one black. Is that using the black to print on photos or is it making black on images by combining the three colors? Since my i860 has a separate black for prints, I'd...

    Recommend New Canon Printer

My i860 just died - the magic smoke came out. Sniff. I'm pretty set on Canon since my experience with them over the years has been good compared to Epsons and HPs, and I've been refilling their cartridges for over 10 years. Major requirement - ability to refill the cartridges easily, and the...

    BCI-6 Starvation - Won't drip

I won't be printing anything until the new Hobbicolors carts and inks arrive. I looked at the ink smears under a microscope. No algae growing. Beyond that I don't really know what to look for, so I don't know normal from abnormal on these smears. The different inks acted differently. The...

    BCI-6 Starvation - Won't drip

That's a good question, and that was running through my mind too. It seems a little more viscous than I recall it being originally, but I wouldn't call it thick. What I notice is that it seems to cling to the hypdermic needle a little more thickly than I recall it doing in the past and seems...

    BCI-6 Starvation - Won't drip

I purged the cartridge of the glycerol solution after letting the sponge soak in that for 24 hours, and refilled it with ink this evening. It doesn't drip ink like it did the water/alcohol/glycerol solution. I may experiment a little more out of curiosity, but I think it's time to buy a couple...

    BCI-6 Starvation - Won't drip

Ethylene glycol is very similar to propylene glycol and is the main ingredient of antifreeze. Pharmacist may be able to tell us if that could be used as a substitute. Glycerol is not the same as either of the glycols. RWL

    BCI-6 Starvation - Won't drip

I think we have a winner!!!! The quick take is that after doing one treatment of this, the cartridge began to drip when the fill screw was removed. It's not filled with ink yet, so the proof won't come for another day or so when I get around to filling it with ink. I began by dripping a drop...

    BCI-6 Starvation - Won't drip

Gycerol=glycerine. Available at the drug stores for about $2.50 for a 4 oz bottle in my area of PA. My question for pharmacist is whether denatured alcohol could be substituted since I have some of that on hand. Not sure what's in it to denature it although I've read that it may include...

    BCI-6 Starvation - Won't drip

Grandad, thanks for your comments. Reflection. Correct. It took a good bit of effort to blow ink out the exit port, but I got a few drops. Opening the refill hole and tilting it at 45 didn't change the ink level in the tank, and it didn't start dripping. My comment had been in regard to...

    BCI-6 Starvation - Won't drip

Here's the companion cartridge that was purged and refilled at the same time. This one is a clone instead of an original Canon cartridge. The air bubble in the tank looks funny because it's lying horizonally. I took the screw out, closed the opening with my finger and blew through the vent...

    BCI-6 Starvation - Won't drip

Neither of my two cyan BCI-6 cartridges will print any more. One is an original Canon for my i860 and the other is a generic cartridge - -probably from Atlantic Ink. I followed Grandad's purge procedure and then purged the printhead with water also. The other colors are working although...
