Several months ago I purchased a Canon MP640 to replace the 2 ip5000's that had given up the ghost. I knew that the MP640 used the smaller CLI220/221 carts that are chipped but I could not find any older Canon printers that used unchipped carts. It was simply a matter of technology moving on...

If you intend for these to be your spare carts they need to be sealed airtight. Many people wrap them in Saran Plastic Wrap or put them into ziplock plastic bags, or both.

Well, it all makes sense to me now, so I guess I'll just wait until the printer tells me that I've run out of ink and that be that. This is the kind of info that makes this forum such a great resourse.

This is how I refill all my carts. I'd rather "top'em off" than take the chance burning up the printhead because the software thought I had more ink left in the cart. When I say almost empty I mean that the ink chamber has maybe 1/8 in of ink left in it.

If you had a Canon printer you could do as I have done many times. Make an 8.5x11 template in your software placing the envelope in the center of the template and feed the envelope from the "center" position. I believe this is very difficult if not impossible with an HP because if you set it...
