I concur... the cost of "fixing" one of these printers that is broken can run through the roof really quick. I bought a used IPF8300 recently and the original owner showed me everything that was wrong with it... and what was right with it. At least I felt the original owner was truthful.
I found an HP tech that offered to clone a few hard drives for me. I sent him 2 IDE and 1 SATA drive to format and place the firmware on it. So now I have a few backups available. I wish I had the ability to do this for myself... :\
I recently acquired a HP Designjet Z2100 and when I first turned it on, the printer would not finish its initialization process stopping at 54%. In the end, it turned out to be the formatter board and more precisely, the hard drive itself. Luckily, I found one on eBay at a reasonable price but...
Keep hitting craigslist... they do show up quite often. Currently, I have about 10+ boxes of 13x19. I also go to Canon when they have their special paper deals. :)
The comic was funny... I saw a youtube video where a guy stated he had a permanent fix for a Epson 9900 printer, never replace a printhead again... as he took a sledge hammer to it.
I went through the service manual and found out where the sensor is for the "Close Carriage Cover" error that was being thrown. Actually pretty easy to get to, so I cleaned it up (wasn't really dirty at all) and that did nothing for the error. I found this link...
