    Am I missing something?

Paul, your original post asked "....if a monochrome portion of a test image is "spot on," would not the color portion be, too? For instance, the Kodak model image here, http://1drv.ms/17BXQ1D has a small circle of 18% gray scale." The simple answer is "no - not necessarily". I have tried to...

    Am I missing something?

These two prints were sent to a "virtual printer" that has perfect greyscale reproduction but very imperfect colour reproduction. The same printer was used for the right-hand image in the PDI set. Such a printer is theoretically possible, albeit unlikely. It just tried to demonstrate that a...

The Poor Man's ICC'ish Color Profiling

Iconoclastic? From where I stand it looks like the opposite. You seem to be defending the Old Gods of Trial-and-Error, Skill' and Experience against the heretical ICC and CIE who preach that accurate colour can be achieved by control of the process using device profiles. I think the real...

Looking for software to print on CD with color management

Can you not use Photoshop with a suitable template? I've never printed on CDs except as an experiment on my 3800 using a home-made carrier so I have to admit I don't know what the process might be if you are using a built-in CD tray. What I do know is that CDs have very different colour...

Excellent video - well worth watching!

    Am I missing something?

OK @Paul Verizzo I'll bite. Yes, you are missing something. A colour space is just that - it's a 3-dimensional space that contains all the colours. In the colour colour spaces that we use the line joining black and white represents all the shades of grey. If that line is perfectly straight then...

Now you've calibrated everything: what lights do you use?

For anyone that is interested in the technical aspects of LED lighting, from the basic technology to colour rendition of different types of lamp, the Soraa web site has some very good papers. Soraa are manufacturers of LED lamps but the papers here (at least the ones I've looked at) are...

Now you've calibrated everything: what lights do you use?

Yes I have one of those - about £2 on eBay if I remeber right. Very useful for inspecting the yellow in nozzle checks - makes the yellow look almost black. Mine has a peak output at about 390nm - just right for OBAs.

Now you've calibrated everything: what lights do you use?

Yes, the print is very nice. Unfortunately it's not my work; it's by a very talented photographe called Pauline Fowler http://www.paulinefowlerphotography.com/ Wish I could do something nearly as good! The lights are intended to illuminate just a relatively small area - about 600mm square. The...

Now you've calibrated everything: what lights do you use?

These product specs highlight one of the "features" of LED lighting, namely that they have little or no UV content. Even a Cree Q5 cool white LED has next to no output below 410nm. This means of course that they don't really excite the optical brightening agents in papers in the way that...

Now you've calibrated everything: what lights do you use?

I have them as ceiling mounted downlighters to give me a reasonable "viewing area". With this arrangement the print brightness is a near perfect match to my monitor brightness (120cd/m2). This is how it looks with an A2 prnt.

Now you've calibrated everything: what lights do you use?

Solux low-voltage lamps are available in Europe - take a look at http://svenlight.co.uk/index.php?id_category=17&controller=category They are so good that I wouldn't consider anything else. I use the 50W 4700K versions and they are, literally, brilliant. I think it's generally agreed that CRI...

How to get neutral B&W with Colormunki + ArgyllCMS

The printers use CMYK inks but they expect to receive RGB data. They are, to the outside world, RGB devices so d2 is correct.

Epson 3800 Pro - ink treatment

I don't take my cartridges out to shake them - I just shake the printer. To be more accurate I lift the printer by the "handles" on each side and rock the whole printer back and forth aboout 10-15 times. It only takes a minute so I do it once a week.

Calibrating and Profiling Monitors...do it correctly. Use Argyll CMS.

One more pop and then I'm outta here...... First let me declare an interest. Much of what I print (for other people) does end up in galleries or art fairs and is sold. So, I am obliged to keep consistent colour. Every print in a limited edition has to be indistinguishable from the next, and...

Calibrating and Profiling Monitors...do it correctly. Use Argyll CMS.

I know this is completely off-topic, but I just couldn't resist it. I hope I may be forgiven. Below is an extract from an article that can be found at http://www.abc.net.au/science/articles/2004/04/27/1081903.htm?site=science/greatmomentsinscience "The myth of mass lemming suicide began when...

Dye Ink In An Epson R1900

Whoa there Hat! I don't think I can let you call my customers dumb without a response;) In fact, in this case, I think he's been pretty smart. He probably paid about £50 for a complete Fotorite re-filling kit (I'm just guessing - I don't sell ink) hoping that he would get acceptable results. As...

Dye Ink In An Epson R1900

Somebody obviously wants to switch from pigment to dye - he just did it and paid me to make a profile for him!

Dye Ink In An Epson R1900

We see many examples of people using pigment inks in printers like the R1400 designed for dye inks but not so much the other way round, so I thought this might be of interest. A few days ago I was asked to make a profile for an Epson R1900 fitted with Fotorite dye inks instead of the...
