Nice spot on that full height groove, as you call it, on the BCI-6 cartridge I cut open. I hadn't noticed that. It's a very shallow recess in the cartridge wall and tapers to nothing just below the top edge of the upper sponge.
The cartridge is a genuine Canon one, not a...
Many thanks all, the fund of knowledge here is invaluable. One of the things I really appreciate about this forum, unlike many others, is that, when a question is asked, different opinions may be offered in response without anyone getting stressed. Very encouraging.

May I ask the thinking behind not taping the air vent hole?
I currently run two cartridges for my printer, one in and one filled as a replacement ready to swap in as needed. The refills sit with orange caps held in place with a rubber band and the air vents and 'German' holes...

Thanks for the thanks. I enjoyed doing it and finding out what goes on inside the cartridge. It's also led to a wealth of other info in threads that, without the links given, could have taken a long time to find.

Yes, my mistake, it was very late when I was writing this up. It's a BCI-6, not a CLI-6. I've edited my original post and the thread title to reflect this.
Following some of the links here has allowed me to find, at my own pace, that I've been re-inventing the...
Seeing how some people are having trouble visualising how a cartridge is made I thought I'd open one up today and photograph it. I posted my findings here

as a sort of thank you to all those in this forum who first inspired me to use...
I had some time on hand today so I cut the side out of a spare BCI-6 cartridge to see how it's made. These
cartridges cost a lot to buy new so I thought it would be interesting to see what goes into them and whether
it was possible to ponder on how much R & D went into their design. And to...
Making a hole at the top, good though it might sound, would not work. It is essential that you inject the ink into the ink reservoir and the only connection between here and the sponge chamber is at the bottom of the cartridge. Ergo, you make a hole at the bottom so the syringe needle can be...
@ oblue:
Two ways I have tried to make the hole for the 'German' method:
1. Heat an old needle over the flame of a gas cooker then, when good and hot, push gently into the cartridge.
2. Make an awl by cutting the end off an old screwdriver then file the circular shaft to a fine, tapered...

Thanks for that. Re purging, is it necessary to remove all trace of the Canon ink from the cartridge before refilling with another ink or is it sufficient to refill simply when the tank itself is empty? If I need to purge all trace of the Canon ink first how do I do this? I've...

That's a great recommendation. And yes, I'd got the impression, reading other posts, that this was definitely the place to come for good advice.
If you've used Hobbicolor inks all this time have you noticed any variation in colours? I will recalibrate my printer once I've purged all...
Hi Pharmacist
I am new to refilling. Like others before me I have finally decided to stop paying exorbitant money for OEM inks. I have a Canon i9100. Having spent much time today checking how refilling is done, your system seems by far the cleanest and easiest.
I only have two questions...
