Good morning. I found this forum on the net and I hope someone will help me. I write from Italy and help Google with the translator. Using Oktoinkjet inks and reloading the original cartridges and replacing the chip. I like the Canon pro 1 but I have a problem with the black photo (PBK) I think. Everything works fine in matte paper and the colors and b & w are correct. In the semi-glossy and glossy papers in blacks it creates lines and bands for me. I think it's the print head. The printer has been used and for 1 year it has always gone well. I have a lot of manual skills and I wanted to try cleaning the print head, or replace it. But I'd like to be sure it's that. I would also try to take an OEM PBK ink cartridge to see that it is not an ink problem.
I did a nozzle check but there are no problems, the lines are perfect.
I also did two printer cleans but it didn't work. These bands appear only with PBK black ink.

Hi @Mario and welcome, from what I can see you’ve clearly got a case of ink starvation in one or more of your colours, but as to which colour is the big question, and manual cleaning of the print head on this model printer is out of the question, just let the printer do its own cleaning.

It’s not possible to swap to OEM inks and get instant results on paper because there is a lot of ink stored in the CISS tubing and it would take quite a lot of printing to change back to OEM inks, or a system clean but that’s the last thing I’d recommend to do in your case.

Check the ink levels in all of the black and grey carts, because one or more of them might be empty regardless of what the chip is showing, an empty OEM cart weight 43.2 gram and for the printer to operate properly the minimum weight should never drop below 55 grams, do this and report back…

Thank you for your answer. The inks are currently filled with:
LGY 68 gr
PBK 73 gr
dgy 76 gr
M 66 gr
pc 70 gr
GY 63
MBK 79 gr
Y 78 gr
PM 69 gr
C 80 gr
CO 80

I believe that air has entered the ink tubes. Yesterday I removed the air from the cartridges to see if that could be the problem. I don't think there is a blockage because the nozzle check gives good results.
I think it's enough to print some photos using PBK black photos on matte paper to unlock or remove air. If even this method does not work at the moment I will only print matte paper, then I will purchase the Prograph 1000 using only original inks.

Hi Mario,

Just seen this post and wanted to just respond... If there was air in the cartridge that migrated into the tubing then that would be causing some problems... Removing it is difficult because the air doesn't move linearly with ink unless is completely blocks the tube. It's likely that it will take time for the air to be pushed out of the system but @The Hat is more experienced with this particular model than myself so I defer to his and other Pro-1 users in that regard.

Let me know if you need any more direct help though.

Thank you all for your reply. In the end I want to fight with this printer and I'm looking for a print head to replace. I have to look for it in Europe. I did a nozzle check and found that the PBK creates problems. In the central part we see that there is a problem and there are longitudinal lines.
As soon as I find a print head I will write here for replacement instructions. This printer already has a few years and I think it is normal to replace the print head every 3/4 years.
I don't think Oktoinkjet inks are the problem. I think maybe I let air in the cartridge when I filled it.

Wow, hang on a minute sunshine, there is nothing wrong with the print head, yes you may have a small light blemish in your PBK block but that is probably down to the cartridge itself.

If you don’t have another spare cart, then flush this PBK cart a couple of times with some warm soapy water or window cleaner, empty and then fill with 5 ml of ink only, now flush that ink out and dispose of it, and refill the cart full with your ink and try printing another nozzle print.

Please remember to shake (Agitate) your refill bottle before refilling your carts every time…

It helps if you have this type of refiller aid..

Good morning. I have already changed the PBK cartridge. I'm doing a nozzle cleaning about every two days. This morning the black PBK looks better than yesterday. I believe that in a few days doing nozzle check will repair.

Good morning!
I continue my fight with the print head! I found a new cartridge from a local retailer, if I can't unlock the print head I'll do the replacement. This printer has made about 900 prints, the old owner definitely left the printer stationary for quite some time. I use it a lot, so with the new head I shouldn't have many obstruction problems.

@The Hat, can you send me MP to change the print head? I want to revive this printer and you are a very competent person with Canon printers.

Hi @Mario, OK I will reluctantly send you the head replacement instructions, but before you splash out on a new head, why don’t you run a system flush, this will use about 35% of your ink but will still be cheaper than a new head.

If you still can’t get a 100% clear nozzle check, then obviously it is time to replace the head..

Thanks for the instructions @The Hat! In truth I have already done a deep wash of the print head but it has not solved...I found a print head at about € 160.00, this printer was given to me by a gentleman who no longer used it, so for me no cost for the printer. Probably I could also have solved it with continuous washing and nozzle checking, but then I go to fill the ink pad. So I thought it wiser to change the print head. It is true that I use Oktoinkjet inchisotri so I have a lower cost than the OEMs and I will continue to use Oktoink because the problem is not caused by the inks, but every time a deep wash is done ink is consumed. I preferred the change of print head also because I want to manage the head since the beginning of its life. I print almost every day and I need the printer to be always efficient and functional.
The change instructions are very simple and I should have no problems. The new printhead should arrive from France next week.
For the moment my printer is off until I change the print head.

The ink levels are represented by the attached jpeg. They are almost all above 50% so there should be no problems with the change. He will have to do a wash with the new printhead, but I don't think there will be problems.
